It is hard to describe just how gorgeous and romantic Lake Como really is! The lake is over 56 square miles, set in Northern Italy just below the Alps. It is completely surrounded by mountains and small towns built into the hillsides. With breathtaking views from every vantage point, it’s no wonder why so many celebrities (oh hi George Clooney!) and wealthy individuals choose to have homes and spend holidays here. At just over an hour’s drive from Milan, Lake Como is the perfect place to take solace after navigating the hustle and bustle of Italy’s classic cultural hot spots.
Getting around by ferry boat is really simple, and makes exploring the different lakeside towns a breeze. There are many incredible villas you can visit – Villa Carlotta and Villa Del Balbianello are definite highlights! After touring the unbelievable Italian gardens at Villa Carlotta, and the impressive architecture of Villa Del Balbianello, hop on a boat over to Locanda dell’Isola for lunch. This restaurant is set on a small island in the middle of the lake and has a really interesting history. You will see pictures of many familiar faces on the walls!
Make sure to make a stop in the town of Bellagio, located at the most central part of the lake. Start by walking through Villa Menzi which has the most incredible gardens. Then walk over to Bellagio and revel in the quaint, pure Italian feel of the cobblestone streets, stairways and alleys. As you’re strolling through town, feel free to duck into the unique, luxe boutiques that line the narrow streets. Take a break for lunch at Trattoria San Giacomo and unwind in the afternoon with a glass of prosecco at one of the charming cafes right on the water’s edge.
Lake Como also has a lot to offer for more active guests, including hiking, biking, water skiing on the lake, windsurfing, golf, and more. The lake really has something for everyone! After you’ve satisfied your athletic side, head over to Gatto Nero for dinner. Set on the hillside with stunning views of the lake and towns, it is the perfect place to arrive early and enjoy the sunset!
When staying in Lake Como, make Grand Hotel Tremezzo your home. This family owned boutique hotel is set right on the water with spectacular views and a pool that floats right over the lake! The hotel is the perfect blend of old and new, feeling both traditional European and modern. They have a sleek and modern spa, incredible restaurants, and a piano bar with a fabulous cocktail menu. During the day, head down to the T Beach Pommery Champagne Bar, where you can enjoy a POP champagne bottle that is customized just for the hotel!
Luxe Tip: Taking a private boat around the lake is an absolute must! Grand Hotel Tremezzo has the most fabulous restored vintage Venetian wooden boat named RUY. Cruising around the lake, listening to the captain tell you stories about the villas you’re passing, taking in the awe-inspiring scenery; it will be a day you never forget!
