So who’s the blonde hair blue eyed gal? I’m looking for Shawna Yamamoto. Yes that’s her with the sweet smile. The one pulling the cart, the one hammering away, the one lifting wall panels and arranging flowers. Shawna Yamamoto Event Design is a full-service Floral and Event Design Company based in Orange County that started in 2009. As designers, they strive to produce events that are unique to each Client. Their team of in-house design fabricators use both floral and non-floral elements to create custom made props that brings each event to life. We asked Shawna a few Q and A’s!
How did you get in this business? By circumstance really. All my girlfriends started to get married and they came to me as I was the “crafty and creative” one. I took floral design classes while still working my 9-5 job.
What type of events are your favorite? Events that allow me to have creative freedom. This can be a wedding, corporate or social event really!
Other than creating beautiful floral, what else do you enjoy fabricating? Anything. I love trying out new ideas, learning how to make new and innovative things. It’s not always fun while troubleshooting or failing endlessly over various attempts, but at the end when we do eventually triumph and figure out how to make it work…it’s amazing.
What do you think makes your business stand out from others? I try not to say NO or that it’s not possible. I try to desperately make the impossible, possible. I try to pull from my client’s ideas, my inner ideas and my team’s input. We try to not limit our creative abilities to what we have seen already, but rather push ourselves to reinvent and think outside the expected.
When did you start sketching? Do you paint? I started to sketch when I could pick up a pencil. My mother and I use to do charcoal drawings together while listening to the soundtrack of “Fame”. I had to be 5 years old and we continued this ritual, venturing into acrylic and oil paints as I grew into my late teen years.
How does your sister Nicole play a role in the company? She brings so much value to my company. I have a way of thinking of something but I am not always the most patient when it comes to fabricating and to be honest, not the best skilled at it. She can get into my head and know what I want and create it with patience and with a skilled hand. As the oldest she was always the one who helped our grandpa fix the broken barns while I was given the job to feed the baby sheep. She worked alongside of our grandpa while he welded hummingbird stain glass windows. She was never afraid to get dirty and there was always something to fix around the farm. She continued to build on her skill set to include masonry, carpentry, welding, electrical and even irrigation/plumping.
Their mission is to understand their Client’s visions and transforming them to reality with creative and flawless execution. The team of imaginative design experts have been curated by Shawna Yamamoto to produce breathtaking events, every single time. They tirelessly exceed their client’s expectations whether they are small intimate gatherings or large-scale events. Their clients consist of not only brides and wedding planners, but corporate meeting planners that take her and the team out of state or country to produce events for up to 12,000 people.
