When you think of Mexico vacations, you probably think of the popular beach locals. I have a new Mexico destination that I would highly recommend- San Miguel de Allende! It is just a 3 hour flight from Los Angeles, but feels like you have arrived in a small European town. San Miguel de Allende is incredibly charming with brightly colored buildings and cobblestoned streets. This quaint UNESCO World Heritage city has been perfectly preserved. It is now a center for art, culture, and history. There are excellent restaurants, gorgeous boutique hotels, and charming boutiques. Don’t believe me? The readers of Conde Nast Traveler selected San Miguel de Allende as the number one city in the world for 2013!
Just outside of the city, you can visit Dos Buhos Winery, one of the first organic wineries. There is a tasting room, vineyards, and a really pretty garden setting to enjoy the fabulous wines. Don’t miss the rose! Another great spot outside the city is Rancho del Sol, a horse ranch with lavender fields and a stunning setting. You can go for the day and ride horses through nearby trails or you can even stay overnight in a ranch house. The family that owns this property are the most gracious hosts!
San Miguel would also make an incredible destination wedding location. You can get married in the gorgeous La Parroquia church, right in the center of the city. Then have a parade through the city with your wedding guests and musicians, receiving many well wishes along the way. And then end with a reception at the Rosewood San Miguel with views of the entire city, where the music can play until 3 AM!
When in San Miguel, make the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende your home. This is a newer luxury hotel with all of the services and amenities you would expect from a luxury property, built in the traditional architecture and colors of San Miguel. The food, service, and overall ambiance couldn’t be better! There are also villas if you are traveling with a family or large group of friends that have plenty of space to entertain. I highly recommend taking in the evening views from their Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar! And if you are celebrating something special, a private dinner in their wine cellar is an incredibly memorable experience.
Luxe Tip: For a unique view of San Miguel, do an early morning hot air balloon ride! This flies as close as possible to the heart of San Miguel de Allende. Great start to a day exploring the fabulous city! And don’t miss the spa at the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende. After days of walking around on the cobblestone streets your body will thank you! If you book your stay with Luxe List Member Ever After Honeymoons you will receive a $100 spa credit!
