Cassia is collaboration between two beloved Los Angeles based culinary couples Bryant Ng and Kim Luu-Ng, alongside Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan. The Le Cordon Bleu trained Bryant, is a classically trained chef with a passion for representing his Chinese Singaporean heritage though food and bringing people together over a memorable meal. At Cassia, the elements that define a great brasserie chilled seafood bar, house cured charcuterie platters, steak frites, and handcrafted beers are comfortingly familiar, while also taking cues from Bryant and Kim’s culinary heritage and experiences. Zoe Nathan and Laurel Almerinda, who oversee the pastry programs for the Rustic Canyon family of restaurants, prepare French inspired desserts that weave in Southeast Asian flavor profiles, such as Strawberry & Cherry Green Tea Mille Feuille and Vietnamese Coffee Pudding. Other sample dishes include: Vietnamese “Sunbathing” Prawns, Kaya Toast prepared with coconut jam and butter, Jellyfish Salad with shredded chicken, crispy rice, green leaf, and sesame-bacon dressing and whole Singaporean white pepper Crab.
Cassia is located on the ground floor of Santa Monica’s historic Telephone Building, a 1937 Art Deco landmark, and was designed by Montalba Architects to be a multifaceted environment. The light-filled front dining and bar area captures the high energy of a Parisian brasserie with Italian Calacutta white marble-topped tables; bleached walnut, mid-century modern furniture upholstered in neutral fabrics; and a long bar fronted with blue tiles and lined with industrial draft stools finished in brushed, galvanized steel—all of which allow the vivid colors in the food to truly pop. Exuding more warmth and intimacy is the Wine Room, a perfect space for an intimate birthday dinner. An L-shaped outdoor patio, enclosed by planters, allows guests to experience Cassia amidst an ocean breeze. This warm and unpretentious restaurant in downtown Santa Monica combines the energy of a French brasserie with the fresh vibrant flavors of Southeast Asia, striking a unique balance of soulful, ancestral and contemporary cuisine.
