In an Orange County sea of chain restaurants and standard fare, Blackmarket Bakery stands out! Founder Rachel Klemek, better known to her staff and patrons as Chef Rachel is anything but bland. Having grown up in the South eating the good old-fashioned cooking of her Grandmas, biscuits, breads, and other delicacies were a way of showing and sharing family love. After experimenting on her own and gaining hands-on experience int he industry, Chef Rachel graduated at the top of her class at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa. In 2004 she founded Blackmarket Bakery in a small industrial space in Irvine.
Since inception her product line, legend and lore have grown. Her incredible cakes, cookies, brownies, popcorn and savory items as well are just a few items that showcase Chef Rachel’s culinary playfulness. With that spirit in mind, Chef Rachel and her family came up with the concept for the Camp space in Costa Mesa. The new Blackmarket Bakery location opened in January 2013, featuring their scratch-made pastries as well as irreverently presented coffee, tarts and nostalgic sandwiches. The goal at the Camp mirrors Chef Rachel’s original passion: To create a conscious moment of indulgence for anyone who dares partake.
