Just a few months ago, Almond Surfboards celebrated their 7-year anniversary. They opened their first retail shop in Newport Beach, California and since that time they have moved the shop twice and built a couple thousand surfboards and sent products all over the world from Australia, Japan, Spain, Italy, New Zealand and South Africa just to name a few. Almond has never been about creating a surf brand. Almond has always been about creating a brand of specific values, and using surfboards as a means to exemplify those values. Almond is a small team of 5 dedicated friends/family who want to make good, honest stuff for good, honest people. Their surfboards are hand-built and their motto they have adopted over the last year or so is “Invest the time, commit to the process.” Whether it’s building a surfboard, or a brand, or completing a project, there are very few shortcuts to success. They have built a solid reputation with their heart and hand.
Dave talks personally about the company in a recent blog post. “We try to never be self-congratulating in the way we talk about Almond, publicly or privately. We realize how fortunate we are to get to do this every day. But, we are very intentional about the way we have set this business up. It is an extension of values that we hold dear, even if those values manifest themselves more subtly. We have always chosen to build products that we believe in, and build things that we hope will last, and build them in the USA. We have always aimed to educate our customers about the products we build, and helped them make informed decisions. We don’t sell anyone on buying a surfboard from us, we just want to explain the purpose and intention that went into the design, and let them decide if that aligns with their wants/hopes/needs. We are thrilled that we get to design, source, and make products. We truly hope that the surfboards we build today will be passed down as heirlooms to the next generation.”
Luxe Tip: With over a dozen surfboards listed in their online shop page, you’re bound to find one that you’ll love in addition to a collection of Almond and Woolrich clothing, also made in California. Don’t see exactly the surfboard you? They have a very reasonable turn around time for custom orders, approximately 6-8 weeks.
